How to Calculate Fabric for Cafe Curtains
Cafe curtains use the same basic formula as standard curtains, but with a shorter drop. Because cafe curtains are often hung on a tension rod mounted inside the window frame, measure the exact distance from the rod to where you want the curtain to end — typically the window sill or slightly below.
Cafe Curtain Formula:
Widths = (Window Width × 1.5× to 2× fullness) ÷ Fabric Width (round up)
Cut length = Drop + 4" hem + 3" header (rod pocket)
Yards = Cut length × Widths × Panels ÷ 36 × 1.1 (10% waste)

Cafe vs. Standard Curtain Yardage
Cafe curtains use roughly half the fabric of full-length curtains because the drop is shorter (24-36" vs. 60-96"). For a 36" wide kitchen window, a cafe curtain uses about 1 yard of fabric compared to 2 yards for a full-length curtain. This makes them an economical choice for kitchens, bathrooms, and breakfast nooks.
